Droplet flow systems Segmented flow in microreactors has recently garnered a lot of attention as a method to combat dispersion along channels and to promote mixing (Tice, J.D. et al. Langmuir 2003 19, 9127-8133). We have treated a microchip with a proprietary surface coating to allow discrete droplets of an aqueous phase to form surrounded by a flowing organic carrier.
In this photomicrograph, red droplets of dye dissolved in H2O (2 microlitre/min aqueous phase) are suspended in a carrier stream of clear fluorinated surfactant flowing at 5 microlitre/min. The red dye stream is flowing from the channel on the left, while the clear carrier comes in from both the top and bottom of the flow junction. Further downstream in the microreaction chip and after a slight widening in the channel, near-spherical droplets are seen. The uniformity is excellent and the spacing of the droplets can be well controlled.
